The debut episode of “Will Smith’s Bucket List” got the adrenaline pumping, and not just because it centered on skydiving.
In the new Facebook Watch series, which debuted Wednesday, Smith and his family travel to Dubai so the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, can go skydiving, his 50th birthday wish. Smith’s sons, Trey and Jaden; his mother-in-law, Adrienne Banfield-Norris; and his father-in-law, Rodney Norris, also join the couple.
In the premiere episode, with five more to follow, Pinkett Smith admits being afraid of heights, adding that she “never ever would think of jumping out of a plane as being fun.”
Once she lands on the ground safely, after jumping, it seems the intensity of the episode turns to sweet relief until Norris and his partner in tandem land, and it’s evident that he is unconscious.
Smith explains to his manager over the phone what happened.
“Rodney had a mild heart attack after jumping out of the plane,” he shared.
“That’s a rough start to the ‘Bucket List,'” he added.
Later, Smith tells his sons and Pinkett Smith that his father-in-law is “fine.”
“The whole idea of the the ‘Bucket List’ (is) like mortality,” he added. “You gotta live a certain way, you gotta live the way of the most unique and organic for you because you never know.”
Jaden takes this as an opportunity to remind his dad how risky his behavior is.
“That’s the thing, and you know this, but it’s just time to take it more seriously now,” Jaden told his dad. “Everybody’s just not built like you, or else, everybody would be like you and they not. Don’t act like the (expletive) that you do isn’t dangerous.”
According to the series, Norris “was released 24 hours later with a minor heart contusion…”
Out of the hospital, he rejoins his family for a boat ride, where Jaden expresses his elation over his recovery.
“Rodney, I’m glad that you’re OK,” he said. “We were really worried about you. And in my book, Rodney, I just want you to know that you did have a successful skydive.”
“Does it count if I don’t remember it?” Norris joked.
In the next “Bucket List” episode, Smith attempts to strike swimming with sharks off his list. On others, Smith visits Cuba to run a half-marathon, tries his hand at Bollywood dancing, hones a stand-up comedy routine with Dave Chappelle and races Trey F1-style.
New episodes of the series are released on Wednesdays (12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT).
