The Best Time to Get an IHG Card

The IHG Reward Club Select Credit Card is hands down one of the best rewards cards out there. Notice how I wrote rewards and not hotel rewards? That’s because this is a card that cracks the top 10 regardless of what your travel goals are. At $49 it has the lowest annual fee, which is even more incredible considering it comes with an annual free night at any IHG hotel.

If you followed my best IHG hotel redemption series you’ll know there are some incredible hotels that easily gets you $500 or more worth of value out of this free night. If that has you sold, then you’ll have to hold back because there is an ideal time to get an IHG card and it’s not now.

When you’re considering getting a new credit card, the best time is usually when you have a specific redemption in mind in the near future or when a large sign-up bonus is offered. The same goes for the IHG Rewards Card. The sign-up bonus on this card has gone as high as 100,000 points after $2,000 spent in three months. The 80,000 point bonus has also been very common. If you don’t have an immediate need for the points, consider applying for the card when the sign-up bonus is above 60,000 points. Make sure you’re opted in to receive emails from IHG, so that you’ll get targeted for a higher offer.

Another thing to take into consideration are bonus point promotions. IHG frequently runs promos where bonus points are issued for activities: Staying at specific hotel chains, on specific days, downloading the app, booking through the app…and applying for the IHG Credit Card.

The bonus for this activity is usually 2,000 points. While that doesn’t sound like a lot, it’s a nice perk on top of a higher sign-up bonus. Factor in the “achievement bonus” that’s issued after 3 out of 5 activities are completed and you’re in for quite a substantial point haul. Luckily, the sign-up bonus on this card is reasonable and even for the 100k offer.

It can definitely pay off to hold off on applying for the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card until the right moment. The IHG Rewards Club isn’t subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule, so the amount of credit card inquiries don’t have to factor into when (or whether) to apply for the card.

However, timing it so you get a higher sign-up bonus or extra points from an IHG Rewards Club promotion can definitely make it more rewarding. Once you have the card, you may as well hold onto it for life since the annual fee pays for itself 10x over thanks to the annual free night.
