Solider who died in parachuting exercise has been identified – SF Gate


SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Green Beret who died during a parachute training exercise in Virginia has been identified.

The Virginian-Pilot reported Thursday that he was Sgt. 1st Class Nicholas Sheperty of the West Virginia National Guard. The 36-year-old had done tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and lived in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sheperty was pronounced dead by local emergency services personnel after suffering fatal injuries Wednesday. He was taking part in a training exercise being conducted at the Suffolk Executive Airport in southeastern Virginia.

Sheperty was part of a high-altitude parachute team. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), out of Kingwood, West Virginia.

Sheperty joined the West Virginia Army National Guard in 2010. He previously served with the Marine Corps Special Operations Command.
