Great-grandmother to celebrate birthday skydiving for cause – Pamplin Media Group

Shirley Romig hopes to raise $12,000 for Hillsboro veterans group Paws Assisting Veterans

RomigRather than have a quaint family dinner to celebrate her 73rd birthday, Hillsboro resident Shirley Romig decided she would rather jump out of a plane. Her decision, however dare-devilish it might seem, is with a greater purpose.

Inspired by a 102-year-old woman who raised $10,000 for charity through a skydiving fundraiser, Romig decided that she could very well do the same to support a cause of her choice. As a service dog owner and someone who has seen the positive impacts service dogs can have on local veteransy, Romig is using her birthday as an opportunity to fundraise for Paws Assisting Veterans, a nonprofit based in Hillsboro, which provides service dogs to veterans suffering from mental illnesses or physical disabilities. PAVE covers the cost of the dog, as well training and supplies, making service dogs available to veterans for free.

Since 2010, the nonprofit has placed 21 service dogs with qualified veterans across the region. Romig hopes to raise $12,000 for PAVE, which is funded entirely by grants and donations.

At 1 p.m., Sunday, June 9, Romig will jump in tandem with a professional skydiver at Beaver Oaks Airport in Eagle Creek.
