Family-Friendly Rewards Programs

Airline and hotel rewards programs are hard enough to figure out when you’re on your own. But when you’re saving up points for a family, it gets even more challenging. What is a family-friendly rewards program? One that makes earning and redeeming large numbers of miles easy. One that makes redeeming points easy – via reasonable award charts and decent award availability. Lastly, a family-friendly rewards program is one that makes rewards travel accessible for families of four or more people. Here are my picks for 5 of the most family-friendly rewards programs

Interested in credit card rewards? You can use this hotel rewards or airline rewards table to compare a more complete list of these offers side by side).

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Southwest Rapid Rewards is probably the most family-friendly rewards program out there. Between early boarding for families and the price-based redemption rates, it’s a great program for families looking for maximum value out of their miles.

But the most impressive feature of the Rapid Rewards program that makes it ideal for families is the Southwest Companion Pass. A family of four can get tremendous value out of it if the adults each get one and designate their children as companions. It essentially becomes a kids-fly-free deal. And since the Companion Pass can be applied to both paid fares and award travel, it can translate to tremendous savings for any family in possession of it.

JetBlue TrueBlue

JetBlue TrueBlue is a great rewards program for families because redemptions are price-based, making award redemptions very low in some cases. But what really stands out about TrueBlue is their family pooling policy, which enables families to combine points from multiple accounts. This makes it easier to save up for and redeem award nights.

British Airways

British Airways makes the list as a family-friendly rewards program because of three attributes: Ease of earning Avios, the ability to redeem several partner awards online, and a distance-based award chart. Why is that relevant? Because it makes shorter distance flights more affordable than traditional zone-based frequent flyer programs.

For example, if a family of four in Sacramento wants to fly out to Los Angeles for a trip to Universal Studios, the flight would cost just 7,500 Avios each way. On American Airlines. Compare that to the AAdvantage program, which would require 12,500 miles each way. The best part? British Airways doesn’t impose close-in booking fees, which can add up substantially for a family.

Starwood Preferred Guest

What makes Starwood Preferred Guest such a family-friendly rewards program is the versatility it offers when it comes to redemptions. You can redeem SPG points for hotel stays or transfer them to over a dozen airlines at a 1:1 ratio. The great thing is that regardless of whether you transfer your points or redeem them for hotel stays, you’re getting great value out of them. Transfers of 20,000 points are eligible for a 5,000-mile bonus. Meanwhile, hotel nights range from just 2,000 – 30,000 points, with the 5th night free.

But perhaps the most useful award for families are the Nights + Flights awards. SPG members can get five nights at a Category 4 hotel and 50,000 airline miles for just 70,000 SPG points. That’s great for family vacations to Disney World because the Walt Disney World Dolphin is a Category 4 SPG property. So for just 70,000 SPG points, you could cover roundtrip airfare for two plus 5 nights in a  hotel. Transfer those points to British Airways Avios for short-haul flights and you could cover even more airline tickets.
