The Cyber Monday Travel Deal Roundup

One of the more curious traditions America has adopted over the years is that of shopping on the days immediately following Thanksgiving. We know them now as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”: the two days where retailers often offer deep discounts in order to attract more buyers, with the hopes of kickstarting the holiday shopping season.

Although there is evidence that camping out in front of stores overnight in the bitter cold is losing favor to shopping online in the comfort of our homes, there are still great discounts to be found over the long holiday weekend. While many are looking for the latest in technology, home goods, or even fashion, these discounts are not exclusive to tangible goods. Rather, frugal travelers can also get into the act by knowing where to shop and who is offering the best deals for their next trip.

When it comes to frugal Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, which brands are offering the best deals? Here is our annual roundup of deals to be found this week.

Air Travel

Alaska Airlines: Traditionally, Alaska Airlines has offered select deals on destination pairs on the week leading up to Cyber Monday. This year is no exception, as the carrier is offering discounts on select flights in their network. The best deals are found flying from Los Angeles to the resort cities of Los Cabos and Ixtapa, Mexico, for less than $200 one way. In addition, the airline promises to release even more discounts on Cyber Monday. The discounts can be found by visiting their website.

Air New Zealand: Last year, Air New Zealand offered discounts of up to $400 on select flights, resulting in big savings for those paying fares in cash. This year, the Star Alliance member is once again teasing Cyber Monday deals, but not on an American-facing website. Rather, deals can be found on their British website, where flyers can book a return flight from London to Los Angeles for as low as around $247.

Cathay Pacific: Los Angeles seems to be the discount capital of Black Friday travel discounts this year, as Cathay Pacific is offering discounted flights from LAX to destinations across Asia. The discounted economy fares range from $651 to Hong Kong, to $840 to Bali. For those who like to rest after Thanksgiving, this deal offers plenty of time, as flights must be booked by Nov. 30.

Delta Air Lines: The Atlanta-based carrier is getting into the holiday spirit as well, by offering deals on award flights across the United States. Through Nov. 28, frugal travelers can get flights to select destinations for as few as 5,000 SkyMiles in economy. All of the destinations are available on the Delta website.

Singapore Airlines: Not to be outdone by their Asian competitor, Singapore Airlines is also offering flights to several destinations in the Far East, all starting at $675. In addition to their home city-state, flyers can book discounted flights to Bangkok, Bali, Jakarta and several other destinations. Flights are available through Nov. 30.

Hotels

Marriott: Since merging with Starwood, Marriott has made several decisions that have been friendly to the frugal traveler – including keeping the two programs separate through 2018. This year’s Cyber Monday is no different, as Marriott is offering discounts at properties around the globe. The discounts extend to all-inclusive resort Atlantis, although the exact deal has not yet been announced. The deals can be found on Marriott’s website.

Starwood: Over on the Starwood side of the merger, members of Starwood Preferred Guest can also take advantage of select Cyber Monday deals. When booking through their website, frugal travelers can receive a discount of up to 30 percent (along with an additional five percent savings) to destinations in the United States and around the world. Sample offers include Chicago from $99, San Francisco from $169 and New York from $199. The discounts are only available to SPG members on their website.

Everything Else

American Express: For those who hold a points-earning American Express card, Small Business Saturday presents an opportunity to earn a choice of double points at participating small businesses. This offer is not just limited to Membership Rewards points cards (like the Premier Rewards Gold card), but all points American Express cards offer – including the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card and the Blue Cash Everyday card! Prior to spending, cardholders must first enroll at the American Express website.

Rail Europe: Finally, for those planning to travel across Europe this summer, the time to purchase train tickets may be Cyber Monday. RailEurope.com will host four sales on their website starting Nov. 28, including discounts up to 40 percent on Eurostar travel beween London and Paris or Brussels, and $40 off tickets between France and Spain or Switzerland.

No matter your traditions, all of us at FrugalTravelGuy wish you a restful and joyus Thanksgiving holiday. And should you decide to shop over the weekend – may the odds be in your favor!
