Card members can earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 and an additional 50,000 points after spending another $10,000 in purchases withing the first three months of opening an account.
In an effort to compete in the world of credit card offers, Amex has upgraded this card’s benefits recently. Earning 1.5x points per dollar spent on all purchases larger than $5,000 is a new addition. Previously, the card earned just 1 point per dollar no matter how large a transaction. Another new perk is being able to receive 50 percent of the MR points back when redeeming for economy flights with the card holder’s selected airline or redeeming for either first-class or business-class flights with any airline. Hence, the sign-up bonus alone is valued at $2,000 when redeemed through Amex Travel, not to mention other perks of this business card.
The card also offers 2x points per dollar spent on bookings made through Amex Travel, a $200 annual credit for incidental travel fees with a selected airline, access to Delta Sky Clubs, Priority Pass Select membership, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit and 10 complimentary in-flight Internet passes with Gogo, among other benefits.
The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN
Individuals can qualify as a sole proprietorship, but mind the high spending requirement. Last time the infamous offer was available on the personal card in May, cardholders found their accounts frozen and points clawed back for purchasing gift cards and violating terms and conditions of the offer. It is clear Amex is after those customers who will keep swiping the card repeatedly, so I recommend reaching the minimum spending organically.
Compared with $3,000 on the personal version of this card, $15,000 is a lot of spending in 90 days and is likely out of reach for most folks. However, business owners could find it lucrative to sign up and reap the benefits of this card. As with the personal card, the annual fee of $450 is not waived for the first year. The offer expires Jan. 25.
If you do not hold any American Express cards at the moment, it is possible to receive a targeted welcome offer of 150,000 Membership Rewards points with this card, but those are extremely rare. The currently available public offer is definitely worthwhile for business owners who have at least $5,000 in monthly business expenses.
